Disposable tableware

Plastic dictionary for the consumer

Latin letters PS mean that the tableware contains polystyrene. That is why such food-grade plastic should only be used for cold foods. The tableware emits toxic styrene when in contact with hot and when heating food. The same harmful substance is secreted when engaged with alcohol. Styrene accumulates in the liver and kidneys which can lead to serious diseases such as cirrhosis. Besides, it exacerbates all kinds of allergies and manifests diseases of the nervous system. Tableware from polystyrene is fragile, breaks effortlessly and often deforms when in contact with hot substances.

The PP abbreviation indicates that polypropylene is included as a compound in the tableware. This type of plastic can be utilized for hot food products and beverages. It can withstand temperatures of more than 100 degrees Celsius. It is possible to drink hot tea or coffee from such glasses and to warm food in the microwave. Polypropylene is also denoted by a triangle of arrows with the number 5 inside it.
